So, people have probably noticed that Tristan and Iseult hasn't been released yet - basically, it's quite literally 99.5% done, playable from end to end, but a couple of things are holding it back.

So, March - and NaNo - is nearly over, and progress on Tristan and Iseult... well, it progresses. Apace.

Ren - despite starting with only ten days to go thanks to previous commitments, and working through overtime at her job, has now finished all the lineart for the game and only has the colouring to go. She insists that I mention that 'corners have been cut', but I'm pretty impressed with her output all the same! I've finished writing the first three parts of the story, and am beginning to worry that I won't fit it all into the month. I still need to write another four thousand words or so (I'm slow) and finish scripting the remainder of the battles and finish up the last of the graphic elements and attach music to everything and...

Tristan and Iseult is starting to look a little more like a VN, since not only have I actually written pretty much all of the first part (of four - hey, Each Uisge only took two weeks...!) but also Ren has graciously agreed to do some sprites for me - the above pair (Tristan and Iseult, surprisingly) are a couple of her sketches.

This time last week, I'd basically got so far as displaying the tilemap, displaying the groups-of-tiny-guys sprites, and doing the highlight-the-squares-yellow thing for their move ranges.

In the intervening time, I've:

  • Got the rest of the battle UI sorted - as you can see in the above screenshot, there's now fog-of-war and a neat little menu for the available unit actions.
  • Written some AI and pathfinding code.
  • Set up the dialogue windows the way I want them, sliding in from the left or right and carrying the character sprite with them.

Every March is NaNoRenO month, where VN-making people (by which I mean Lemmasoft forum denizens) attempt - in the mould of NaNoWriMo - to create a whole VN from beginning to end in a month. It's a really good event for a lot of people, especially those who haven't yet made and released a game of their own. Firstly, it gives you that happy hit of satisfaction for having actually completed and released something; secondly, it gives you an idea of how much work is actually required to complete a whole VN. Hint: it's actually quite a bit.
